Penn Station Has New Magnolia Bakery Branch

I pass through Penn Station semi-regularly, more often than Grand Central, so I want to explore the neighborhood in terms of "picking up food on the way home",  the most convenient procurement for anyone with a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong (needs more O's) commute.   Some of my choice filters include "GF if possible", "Not sandwiches",  "Nothing with vinegar" (including mustard or mayonnaise) and "I hate (most) cold savories" (use pesto, man, what are we, barbarians?).

My most recent visit was Thursday night (If anyone needs to know, there's a FedEx Office branch at One Penn Plaza with a late (9 pm) pickup deadline), and I needed dinner.   Penn Station's LIRR level is being renovated.   One group of once-reliable, if generic, fast food places has been replaced by...a Duane Reade pharmacy?   Really, guys?  Sigh.

Another casualty of these renovations was a smoothie / soup stand I used to frequent.   It has a sibling up on the Amtrak level but, it being past dinner hour, soup choices were limited to Nope, Nope, and Hell Nope.   I ate at a Yum! Brands subsidiary and felt more able to face the commute home.

Back down on the LIRR level, further down the long passage between the 1/2/3 subway line and the A/C/E,  I discovered the new Magnolia Bakery outpost and ALMOST forgave Penn Station for the renovations.  I have a fondness for their mini cheesecakes.  Vanilla bean is my favorite, although the Red Velvet is also nice.  This visit I also saw Chocolate,  Caramel (Pecan?) and Key Lime.   They were pushing their banana pudding, but I prefer that warm if I'm indulging.   The cheesecake is rich enough (for me) to split into two servings without feeling deprived even a little bit.

It was a sweet, if long, trip home  8)
